Still shook about Chelsea. As a boy I was pretty
naive, I guess. A ridiculous idealist who believed GOOD WILL
was the way of the world, that the basic instinct of all men
was doing the right thing first, and if a man failed, if a
man went wrong, well then, he needed our help - along with
our insistence that he pay his debt to society. I
believed, because I was taught, that if a man was sent to
prison it was, it had to be, society's job to rehabilitate
that man. It was our job to try. Most of us
believed that. And somewhere that all got lost, it
went away like a cross-fade on stage; one moment
you’re in the light, the next you’re in the
dark, still able to see the light – but forever lost
to that moment. So it came to pass that we
stopped trying. Punishment was the goal and recidivism
was the result. And I imagine many of us felt disappointed
by that, but faced with such an onslaught of individuals of
little or no conscious, no fear, no feelings, and with a
nonchalant mindless willingness to beat you senseless, to
rape you in a park and kill you, to crush away your
life as if you were no more than a bug, with all that
most of us accepted the hopelessness of it all, I
guess. But, even then, deep in our souls I think we
still wished for each man to have another chance. But
I no longer feel that way about a man who would rape a girl
and then kill her and bury her in the mud. He cannot
be fixed. Nor can the others like him. Put them
away and don't let them out.

as OnStage Playhouse stages Stephen Sondheim’s most
popular musical. Inspired by the timeless tales of the
Brothers Grimm, Into the Woods tells the story of a
childless Baker and his Wife who journey into the woods
on a quest to lift a witch’s curse. On the way they
cross paths with Little Red Ridinghood, Rapunzel,
Cinderella and a menagerie of other fairy tale
characters. Each pursue individual wishes until their
stories become entangled in unexpected ways –
revealing what happens after happily ever after.

INDEPENDENCE - PowPAC
Mar 5 - Mar 28. Independence, Iowa, is the lifelong
home of Evelyn Briggs. Her oldest daughter, Kess, is a
university professor in Minneapolis, but she has come
home at the request of her sister, Jo who is concerned
for Evelyn's mental health. Kess, a professed lesbian,
wants to cut her family ties once and for all; Jo, an
incurable romantic and longtime virgin, has now become
pregnant; while Sherry, salty-tongued and amoral, wants
only to finish high school so she can leave home for
good.
In the end they come to realize that each must find her
own heaven—or hell—in her own way..
